Roy Jenkins Pool Circa 1930

We Need Your Help to Open the Pool !

The gates are locked to one of Davis Islands most historic gems.  The Roy Jenkins Pool.  Many of you have undoubtedly swam in it's cool waters or have a parent or grandparent who did.  Unfortunately, Roy Jenkins Pool, which is typically open for the summer, has been closed since last summer and may remain closed for the foreseeable future.

Why?  Initially, the pool closed because it was out of compliance with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act signed into law in 2007.  Under this act, all public pools had to replace their current drain cover with one that complied with the legislation by December of 2008.

The City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department replaced the drain cover in 2009 but has not yet reopened the doors of Roy Jenkins.  Their concern is that the new drain cover will negatively impact the pool's rate of flow and filtration, therefore failing to meet Health Department standards.  They also state that once pool repair to address filtration begins, a multitude of other issues will arise...escalating the pool's costs to well over 2 million dollars.

Concerned residents have been lobbying the city staff, Mayor and the city council to earmark funds to this project.  Unfortunately, in the state of this economy, budgets are being slashed, but we will continue to write our letters, attend city council meetings and meet with Park officials to find a way to get our pool up and running for City of Tampa residents.

Inevitably, our community will need to raise money to assist with the pool's revitalization effort.  And, I am happy to announce plans for our Second Bluz and BBQ Event.

Mark your calendars for the Roy Jenkins Pool Blues & Barbeque fundraiser to be held on Saturday, Oct. 15th.  VIP tickets are available for  $100 each and include food and drink.

We have some fantastic Blues Music that will be sure to knock your socks off!  The food will be spectacular and the company even better!

How can you help?  We are looking for:

·        Event Sponsors, Both in kind and monetary

·        Be ready for cool sounds and fun times with your friends and neighbors!
