Guavaween 2009

Here we go! That time of the year is here when Mama Guava once again presides over the annual festival. Guavaween, the yearly Tampa-style Halloween celebration is reminiscent of New Orlean’s Mardi Gras. Every year, the raucous track slider celebration is held on the last Saturday of October, often coinciding with Halloween and the many Halloween parties. It features costumes, floats, live music, video camera dolly tracks, and parties that trundled along Seventh Avenue. Approaching its 25th year, Guavaween will once more hold the Stumble Parade where the colorful steadicam stabilizer costume contest is highlighted; the live concerts will also be a big part of the wacky and wild street party. The festival takes its name from the mash-up of Halloween and Tampa’s nickname: The Big Guava—as opposed to New York City’s The Big Apple. It’s a whole day glide gear affair that features activities for families and of course, for adult revelers. Guavaween attracts many visitors for all over the country and has also gotten some international interest. The family friendly events are held from 10 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon during the Family FunFest; it includes activities such as hand held camera stabilizer safe trick-or treating, scavenger hunts, food, rides, and a children’s costume contest and parade. Once the clock strikes 4:00, the evening party will officially get under way with the elaborately attired Mama Guava leading her followers and the revelers through the Stumble Parade. Participants in the costume contest aren’t the only ones to dress up for Guavaween; it is common practice for people, grown-ups and children alike, to attend the celebrations in costume, making it more fun for everyone. Tampa’s historic landmark district and Florida’s Latin Quarter, Ybor City hosts the Guavaween. Its unique urban community and the rich multicultural heritage is a wonderful backdrop for the festival and highlight’s the area’s very desirable residential, professional, and recreational qualities. Aside from being a fun-filled festival, the Guavaween is a street party with a purpose. It serves as a big fundraising event for the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce.
