Bluz and BBQ

The Bluz and Bbq festival is here. On August 16 from 6:00-10:00 p.m. the party will start in the Davis Island Garden Club on 81 Columbia Drive, with dinner served by PitMaster BBQ. There will also be live music by ozone generators Lounge Cat. The event is a fundraiser for the Davis Islands Capital Improvement Fund and the proceeds will go to the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay. First on the camera stabilizer fund’s list is the Roy Jenkins Pool restoration project. This Davis Island historic gem’s gates are locked and the community needs everyone’s help to open the pool. The Roy Jenkins pool has been around for a long time and many of us have very likely gone swimming there; some of us may even be a 2nd or 3rd generation swimmer. Sadly, the Roy Jenkins pool, which generally operates for the steadicam summer season, has been closed since the last summer and will probably remain so indefinitely. Why is this happening? At the outset, the pool was shut down because it did not comply with the crystal singing bowl Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act which has been signed into law in 2007. The law requires that all public pools upgrade their drain covers to the kind that meet the requirements of the legislation by December of 2008. While the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department has replaced the microdermabrasion machine drain cover in 2009, it did not lead to the reopening of the Roy Jenkins pool. Concerns have arisen about how the new drain cover will negatively affect the pool’s rate of flow and filtration, which will lead to its failure in meeting Health Department ozone generation standards. Even when they start repairs to deal with the filtration, there are concerns that many other issues will surface, therefore increasing the repair costs to well beyond a couple of million dollars. The community has been petitioning the city, the mayor, and the city council to allocate funds for this plan, but due to the rough economic situation, there’s just no budget. Still, we will continue to campaign, attend city council meetings, and meet with Park officials to find the means to get the pool opened for the residents of Tampa. So, save the date and show your support; enjoy great music and good eats while you’re at it.
